MC 702 - Master of Journalism

 

Master of Journalism is a new master’s degree by mixed mode method. This is newly offered by the faculty commencing September 2017. Ratio of coursework to dissertation is within the range 50-50 and the recommended length of dissertation is range between 20,000 and 40,000 words. Coursework component includes courses in theory and research methodology. Course content is challenging and enriched with high level analytical topics that spark critique, debate and innovative mindsets. Those candidates who are professionals in various areas without journalism background have to attend pre requisite courses. Half of the coursework component is taken up by common courses taken together with students from other Masters program – namely Master of Communication. 

 

Synopsis of Courses Offered

The programme offers five (5) discipline courses that focus on journalism aspects:

 

  1. Journalism and Culture – This course focuses on current societal trends using framework on network society, risk society and ageing society to analyse the interplay between journalism and culture. The overall goal of the course is aimed to prepare students with the awareness of the media and its culture that may shape the culture of the people of today as well as students will have a critical viewpoint and an investigative mind on the various media technologies and narratives as the course set forth major new statements on the role of journalism in democracy.

 

  1. Critical Issues in Journalism – The course is to get students to sharpen their skills on the ability to question assumptions, evaluate evidence, analyse on the structures of power and generate knowledge that can lead to a better understanding of critical issues. This include on examining issues of importance to journalism, to promote critical responses to public issues, interpreting and disseminating information about the increasingly complex world, technological advances besides enhancing journalistic skills.

 

III. Media Entrepreneurship – This course would allow students to explore the dynamics of entrepreneurship and knowledge of opportunities in creative media businesses. Topics encompasses entrepreneurial concepts, business models, content branding, the art of marketing content-based businesses, social media platforms and various themes related to the changing trends in the global media landscape.

 

  1. Mass Media Research - Introduces students with quantitative and qualitative research methodology in media studies, as well as to facilitate them to gain practical skills of conducting quantitative and qualitative researches in the area. The semester will be divided into two parts. For the first seven weeks, students will be exposed to theoretical knowledge on the related topics in quantitative research methodology, undertake practical work such as developing research plan, choosing samples, constructing questionnaires, and collecting data. As survey research and content analysis are considered to be the main methods in quantitative research methodology, students will sequentially cover all its stages from developing research questions to data analysis and reporting. As for the second half of the semester, students will be exposed to the basics of qualitative research methodology. The three main designs in qualitative research such as interviews, observations, and document analyses will be taught. 

 

  1. Dissertation - Students will be exposed to the process of writing a dissertation based on a scientific research conducted quantitatively or qualitatively. Beginning with identifying problem related to the field of communication, mass communication, or mass media, students are guided by supervisors selected and assigned to them for the whole project. Then, the supervisor and their students will work closely from stage to stage starting with writing proposals, then follow by data collection and analysis, and lastly completing the final report.  This is a one-semester project and at the end, a comprehensive dissertation report with the novel findings and idea will be produced.

 

There are common courses required by the university that’s compulsory taken by the students. The following subjects are:

 

  1. Communication Theories

This course will expose students to the philosophy of communication theories in term of its origin, evolution and development. Topics of discussion incorporate the functions, value and relevance of theories in the communication discipline. This course will assist students in assessing the pervasiveness of theories based on the following categories:  the self and messages, relationship development, groups and organizations, the media, and the cultural diversity. Additionally, this course will develop a good understanding and appreciation of the multifaceted application of communication theories in research and various communication contexts.

 

VII. Communication Ethics

This course will endeavour to discover universal ethical values for professionals of mass media. It will look at recurring criticism of media and media practitioners and the limitations of these criticisms.

 

VIII. Graduate Seminar - the Journalism programme hosts a discussion forum for students to present and exchange views on the most current and emerging trends, issues, and practices in the communications industry.

Synopsis

This programme will take about three (3) to six (4) semesters for full-time students and up to four (4) to six (6) semesters for part-timers. Students will have to complete a thesis and can audit courses (no fee imposed). Students need to consult lecturers (thesis supervisors) on a regular basis.

 

Entry Requirement

A basic degree (in a relevant field) from UiTM or any institution of higher learning recognized by the UiTM Senate with a minimum of 3.00 CGPA;

OR

Other qualifications equivalent to a basic degree (recognized by the UiTM Senate) with relevant experience in the related field. Candidates applying for Masters by research are required to submit a research proposal in their preferred area of study in communication. In addition, prospective students must pass an interview conducted by the faculty. Must

pass an interview.
