SEMESTER 2

INC410—PRINCIPLES OF INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION

This course is designed to introduce students to the principles of interpersonal communication as a field of study. Students are taught theoretical knowledge in interpersonal communication processes, its challenges and its respective guidelines to achieve competency in interpersonal communication. Particular attention will be given to core elements of the interpersonal communication processes, such as perception building, listening skills, understanding self, communication style, verbal communication, non-verbal cues in communication and issues affecting human relationship in various communication context. These theoretical and practical applications are aimed at developing meaningful interpersonal relationships, both at professional and personal levels.

 

SEMESTER 3

INC531/INC570—FAMILY COMMUNICATION

The course examines the relationships between family in a communication system. This includes ways in which an individual (gender) and family as social institution create social meanings and how it is constructed through communication. Topic focuses on the social production and reproduction of family across a range of institutional (family), interaction, and cultural contexts. Students will explore the meaning and importance in creating positive communication climate. Students will learn multiple functions of interaction in family and understand gender differences to appreciate the complexity of relationships. This course will also provides an important issues relating to relationships between family life and gender role in social setting despite cultural differences.

INC532—HEALTH COMMUNICATION

This course explores the study on health communication in various meanings surrounding catastrophic conditions. This caourse examines of the role of communication in health awareness campaign, health care delivery, disease prevention, risk communication, solutions in environmental health hazards as well as in promoting awareness on personal and psychological well being in the society. The course focuses on the role of communicators in promoting the public agenda in advocating policies and health programs, cutting across multiple levels of communication, medium of communication, and the use of various communication media and technologies in designing campaigns to educate and promoting positive changes in the delivery messages on issues pertaining to public health and health care services.

INC530—NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION

This course is to equip students with knowledge and understanding on the fundamental concepts associated with nonverbal communication and nonverbal elements involved in human interactions. The topic will explore on the nonverbal communication codes such as eye contact and touch, the functions in interaction to influence the management of conversation, the impressions formed in interactions and the process of social influence.

 

SEMESTER 4

INC541—INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION

Understanding cultural diversity affect how people perceive the world, what they value and how one make sense of the world around them. This course provides and introduction to intercultural communication as a network of behaviours, values, norms and beliefs of people. Topics discuss the intercultural communication models and the underlying dimensions of culture which is essential in developing appreciation and tolerance of diversity among people from various cultures. Topic also presents the relationship between communication and culture, the taxonomies of cultural patterns, verbal and nonverbal intercultural communication, intercultural barriers and skills needed in achieving intercultural competence in multicultural settings.

INC550—EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE IN HUMAN RELATIONS

The course provides students with the basic understanding of what emotional intelligence is, how emotional intelligence might be measured, and how emotional intelligence might play a vital role in the workplace, universities, colleges, schools, family and our daily lives. To achieve this goal, students are introduced to fundamental theories concerning emotions, intelligence, personality, a variety of measurement paradigms and concepts, where knowledge about emotional intelligence may add to theory and research. These include studies of human relationships, emotional development, abnormal behaviour, and workplace performance. Throughout the course, the students are exposed to current cutting-edge research, the nature of consensus and controversy in psychological science and the explored ways to advance personal emotional intelligence.

INC542/INC671—PUBLIC ADVOCACY

This course is designed to prepare the students for positions as professional communicators in the private institutions, public sectors and non-governmental organizations. This course focuses on the basic skills and strategies to be a good public advocate who can be successful in lobbying, influencing public decision-making, organizing and coalition building and also working with the media. Classes will be interactive and discussions will explore topics for which there is no such thing in establishing a ‘correct’ answer—everyone’s opinion counts for sure! This course also stresses on teaching and learning process which does not only incorporate books, but sending the students to speak with the practicing advocates and bring the knowledge and back to class. This will help them to build a network of professionals that will much assist their work and career in future.

INC543—INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS

This course serves as an introduction into the field of industrial relations. It is also design to explore the major issues of Industrial relations in Malaysia. Students will learn about the history of the field and labor unions. In addition, students will also learn in how the industrial relations system in Malaysia, concepts and values in industrial relations, trade union and functions, management, employee involvement and participant, industrial action, collective bargaining, negotiation and so forth.

 

SEMESTER 5

INC651—INTERNATIONAL STUDIES

This course is designed to foster understanding and awareness of world issues and the globally connected environments. Topics incorporate issues organized around global forces that shapes our lives and issues emphasizing on history, culture, the environment, government, languages, nationalism, religious, poverty and critical interventions in international conflict and cooperation poverty from the global perspectives. Central to the understanding of international studies, examine the fundamentals of diplomacy, contemporary use of diplomacy, diplomatic practices as negotiation game and the implications of these forces on national society, cultural and social developments and world affairs.

INC653—GROUP DYNAMICS

Group dynamics introduces students to the art of communicating within a group. Students will be exposed to the dynamics and uniqueness of communication in achieving a positive climate in-group interaction. Topic encompasses the axioms of group formation, development, communication strategies, conformity, conflict, and leadership. In addition the course will stress upon the ability of students to think critically, applying emotional intelligence in groups and strategies in upgrading and assessing their skills in group and team communication.

INC654—NEW MEDIA AND THE NETWORK SOCIETY

This course explores how the new media reshape and redefine the society in various context of their everyday life. Topics focus on issues surrounding new media and its power in shaping and redefining the human and in creating network societies. Discussions on fundamental ideas and concepts related to cyber-culture, online networks and Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD) apart from how the virtual network play its role in promoting collective action in the physical world. In addition, the course also exposes students to the interplay between new media and the network society towards the human self, identity, interpersonal relationships, netiquette practices, gender issues, social activism, the sharing economy and cyber-political paradigms.

INC652/INC572—CONFLICT COMMUNICATION

This course is designed to expose students to the various dimensions of conflict and issues related to conflict transformation. It includes how conflict arises, the emotional reactions to conflict and overcoming conflicts in communications through practical strategies. In addition the course exposes students to the interplay between the relational systems in a larger social, cultural systems, gender and power play in expanding conflict environments. The course also examines conflict at the personal, professional, and social levels; building from the more simple negotiations and mediations disputes to those of greater complexity and scope that occur in various communication encounters. Topics are focused on the dynamics of communication, its competency skills, emotional intelligence, facilitation, the art of negotiation and mediation necessary to achieve successful conflict resolution.
